Gil Scott-Heron was an influential poet and performer. He was many other things, but I think that these are the most keen descriptors. I've only posted him once before. I featured his poem/performance, "Johannesburg," from his album From South Africa to South Carolina (1975). This is his autobiography--which must be very interesting. His mother was a librarian and his father was a Jamaican soccer player. This quote isn't from the book, FYI.
