Copper Sun is the story of Amari, a Ghanaian girl who is stolen by slave traders and forced on a brutal ship to the Carolinas. The story follows her attempts to escape the plantation and reach freedom. It also follows her transformation from Amari to “Polly” - her new name. It’s a YA book, but still has some obviously painful themes. It won the Coretta Scott King Award. Highly recommended!
