Child of the Dark is Carolina Maria de Jesús’ diary of living and raising two children in poverty in the favelas (slums) of São Paulo, Brazil. Carolina was just a regular woman who decided to document her experiences with poverty. Her diary spans from 1955-1960. Due to its personal and firsthand nature, it really drew a lot of international attention to the true scope of poverty and its damaging effects on people. This diary is an extremely important historical document!
