Lumumba Speaks: The Speeches and Writings of Patrice Lumumba (Patrice Lumumba)

“The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations…Africa will write its own history and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity”

Democratic Republic of Congo / 1972

Patrice Lumumba was Congo’s independence leader and the first democratically elected leader of the country. He dedicated his life to fighting colonial exploitation. He was a revolutionary leader, thinker and organizer. A true legend with an unfortunate demise. He was assassinated via firing squad in 1961. His murder was a co-conspiracy between America and Belgium- who saw his revolutionary leadership as a threat. This quote is from a letter he sent to his wife while he was imprisoned. I recommend reading more of his speeches and writings. He was way ahead of his time and truly brazen in his fight against the evil that was colonialism.
