The Underground Railroad is about—you guessed it—the Underground Railroad: the elusive network of pathways and hide-outs that helped people escape bondage during American slavery. However, Whitehead's tour de force reimagines this network as a literal railroad that an enslaved woman named Cora utilizes in her perilous journey to freedom. This book was an official selection for Oprah's Book Club! It also won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2016 National Book Award.
