All About Love (bell hooks)

"All too often women believe it is a sign of commitment, an expression of love, to endure unkindness or cruelty, to forgive and forget. In actuality, when we love rightly we know that the healthy, loving response to cruelty and abuse is putting ourselves out of harm's way.”

If this ain't the truth! If I could, I would quote this entire book. All About Love should be required reading for all people. hooks' perspective on love is so totally revolutionary. Love does NOT hurt. The fact that many of us think it does stems from the conflicting messages our parents sent our young selves: beating and professing to love us all at once, making pain and love seem intertwined, inextricable. Read this book! It's near the top of my must-read list.
