Zimbabwe / 1988

This is a classic coming-of-age novel that explores race, gender and power within a postcolonial context. It really gets at the limitations African girls face when striving for anything other than mule status. Basically, a young girl named Tambu growing up in rural Zimbabwe struggles against sexist customs to try and become educated and empowered.
