Shoutout to fresh talent! 20-year-old Donte Collins of St. Paul, Minnesota has won the Most Promising Young Poet Award from the Academy of American Poets. This is an extremely prestigious national award. He won for his poem, "what the dead know by heart." Collins is a student at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He is also a spoken word artist. This gem of a poem is about the collective black rage that's felt after police shootings:
"I haven’t enough room to both rage and weep. i go to cry and each tear turns to steam. I say I matter and a ghost white hand appears over my mouth."
Such impressive work. Congratulations, Donte!
