📃: When I started this blog, about six months ago, one of my fears was that I would run out of books and authors to post. I thought to myself: "Are there really enough black authors to post on for almost every day?" Boy, was I mistaken! I, too, had bought into the false notion that the only big voices we had were those of Morrison, Hurston, Hughes, Achebe, etc. This blog has been a journey of discovery and learning for me, too. Learning that the racist, "one at a time" practices of the white-controlled book publishing industry means that black voices are usually dismissed, misconstrued to fit stereotypes or completely silenced. Discovering new and emerging voices and publications and understanding the hopeful way that the literary landscape is expanding to be more inclusive of different kinds of writing and different kinds of blackness. Discovery, also, of the black voices throughout the Diaspora - voices that are extremely important and offer fresh perspectives.
Through this journey, I've concluded that there actually aren't enough days in the year to even highlight every black author! There's so much good stuff out there that doesn't get amplified. That makes me hopeful, both as a reader and a writer. To my black writers: don't feel like you have to write shit that white folks will fawn over. Write for us. And don't get discouraged if people devalue your work because it doesn't fit into a neat box of bullshit. To my black readers: there is so much amazing writing out there from black folks around the world. Just because some white publishing house isn't pushing it, that doesn't mean it's not valuable. They are sneaky as hell in their determining of who gets published, and which narrative gets upheld. Remember: they are publishing shit with a white audience in mind. Black pain, death and plunder is the stuff that gets them excited. In conclusion: keep writing things you want to write and keep reading things you want to read. In the meantime, I will try my best to make this a platform for new, forgotten, niche and global stuff!📖💕
